Pressure-tight joints made on the pipe threads
The standard ISO 7 - Pipe threads where pressure-tight joints are made on the threads consists of
- ISO 7-1:1994 Dimensions, tolerances and designation
- ISO 7-2:2000 Verification by means of limit gauges
The ISO 7 tapered Whitworth threads are equivalent to DIN 2999, BS 21 (BS EN 10226-1), JIS B0203.
Characteristics of ISO 7 tapered Withworth threads are
- tapered thread 1o47'
- truncation of roots and crests are rounded
- 55o thread angle
- pitch is measured in threads per inch
Note! Grandtotal 4 0 4 – create invoices and estimates.
There is a distinction between
- jointing threads - sealing tapered/cylindrical threads for connections according to ISO 7-1 and/or EN 10226-1, BS 21
- fastening threads - not sealing parallel cylindrical threads for connections according to EN ISO 228-1
Diameter and pitches are the same for ISO 7-1 and ISO 228 threads.
ISO 7-1 is BSPT (R/Rp) – British Standard Tapered Pipe where
- R - tapered male with external threads
- Rp - cylindrical female with internal threads
- Rc - tapered male with internal threads
G-threads have a parallel shape in accordance with the DIN-EN-ISO 228-1 standard.
Both female Rp - internal cylindrical threads - and Rc - internal taper threads - are used in combination with male R - external threads - to make sealed joints. Male G-threads (parallel) can only be screwed into female G-threads.
Male R-threads (tapered) can be screwed into female G or R-threads.
Male R-threads (tapered) can be screwed into female G or R-threads.

The outside diameter of a pipe or fitting must be measured and compared to a table for size identification. A 3/4' ISO 7-1 pipe thread has an outside diameter - OD - of 1.060 inches. Each thread size has a defined number of threads per inch - TPI, or pitch. The 3/4' NPT pipe thread has 14 threads per inch. Both the TPI and OD of the thread are required for positive identification of thread size because more than one size have the same TPI.
ISO 7-1 threads may look similar to NPT threads. However, ISO and NPT threads should not be mixed. ISO threads have 55o taper angle versus 60o for NPT. The NPT root and crest configurations are also different from ISO. For ISO threads pitch is usually measured in millimeters ( may be expressed in Inch). The pitch are different.

ISO 9001 Requirements – Clause 7.1.4 Environment for the operation of processes
The term environment in this context refers to the work environment and is used to describe the set of conditions in which employees perform their work and under which products and services are produced. Conditions can include physical, social, psychological and environmental factors (such as temperature, lighting, recognition schemes, social and occupational stress, ergonomics, etc). 1 blocker 1 4 8 x 2. It can also relate to conditions on how work is actually done (complex, repetitive, creative, interactive, team, etc.) in work processes and procedures.
Specific environmental conditions for product or services (e.g. at a meat packaging plant or delivery of perishable product) will be discussed later under clause 8.5.4 preservation.
The organization should provide and manage a suitable work environment to achieve and maintain the sustained success of the organization and the competitiveness of its products.
A risk assessment should be done of the facility work environment conditions to identify and control the risks related to their impact on:
· Product & service quality,
· Operation of business & qms processes,
· Health & safety of employees.
This should be part of the risk management process (see clause 6.1).
These risks will serve as inputs to the planning of controls of the work environment. The risk assessment should also include the impact of noncompliance with regulatory requirements.
Suitable work environment conditions should include consideration of ergonomics; nondiscriminatory, calm, friendly and non-confrontational; workplace stress; health and safety; etc. These factors and related controls are discussed in detail in my eBook.
Maintenance of the work environment conditions would require many of the infrastructure and people resource maintenance activities already discussed in the previous sections. Additionally it would require periodic checks by responsible personnel such as an H&S committee for compliance to any standards and internal criteria established by the organization for workplace conditions it will operate under, e.g. compliance to temperature, lighting & ventilation criteria & settings. Many of these conditions could be managed through computerized controls.
The work environment should encourage productivity, creativity and well-being for the people who are working in or visiting the organization’s premises (e.g. customers, suppliers, and partners). At the same time, the organization should ensure that its work environment complies with applicable statutory and regulatory requirements and addresses applicable standards (such as those for environmental and occupational health and safety management).
Again these are huge topics by themselves with plenty of standards and existence of expert literature which goes far beyond what is expected from this ISO 9001 standard. Apply the laundry list of factors listed in my eBook as applicable in keeping with the size, nature of business, products & services, risk and other considerations. The focus should be on employee welfare and safety, effective operation of QMS processes and product conformity.

This article is an extract from my eCourse “Understanding ISO 9001:2015”. The rest of the article on this clause discusses in detail the various types of work environmental conditions an organization may be faced with and how to address them as per the requirements of clause 7.1.4.
